Worldwide the number of patent applications surges, especially in China which recently overtook the USA. Especially digital applications are more and more patented by global companies from China, like Huawei, but also SMEs. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to learn how to patent use cases, user and customer journeys, apps, and digital business models. This was also the key question of the webinar hosted by the China IPR SME Helpdesk on 07.10.2020, which explored the patent activities of European and Chinese companies. The webinar in English was a cooperation between the China IPR SME IP Helpdesk and IP Management at CEIPI.

In the webinar, the successful methods of IP-Management and IP-Design were demonstrated using best practice examples. Examples of AI-based advertising with Mirriad and the digitalization of sales processes at Thyssenkrupp were shown. The targeted generation and use of IP in digital business models was motivated with the Hilti and Heraeus Amloy case studies. Finally, also an in-depth analysis of the digital IP strategy of Schattdecor with its focus against counterfeiting was presented. You can find further examples of successful IP management and IP design, as taught at CEIPI and with the EPO in Dublin, here.

Participants from Europe and China registered for the webinar to learn about the modern practices of IP management and received an overview of the state of IP Management. Lecturer was Dr. Alexander J. Wurzer, Professor of IP Management at CEIPI, University of Strasbourg, and Head of the IP Management Education.
