AI is used more and more in professional contexts to improve both speed and accuracy of especially text-based work. And after initial hesitancy also managers, customers and clients are increasingly requesting the use of AI and the related efficiency improvements from their employees and external experts. This is also true in the field of IP, where AI can be used in many ways, from improving patent searches to making inventions on demand. Therefore, the skills to properly operate AI tools become more important among IP experts and like all new skills they need to be learned and continuously trained.

👉 Our IP business academy expert Sebastian Goebel is offering a webinar on that topic on 5th December this year to support in-house and external IP experts to build up those skills. If you book the seminar via the following link, you will benefit from the best conditions for the IP business academy community. You can find more information here.

Why AI adoption is now a must for companies and experts

Since the introduction of the first AI models on the market, which were created with no concrete application and use case in mind, but served more as a proof-of-concept of the power of AI, much has happened. Today AI models and LLMs specifically are trained to fulfil very specific tasks and help experts to do concrete jobs. Additionally, the AIs are also increasingly built in a way to become more transparent and to better explain the users how they created their outputs, so that the users have an increasingly better understanding of the output and also trust in its correctness.

Additionally, security concerns from the early phase of AI are now also increasingly addressed by the makers of AI and the providers of AI based services. While in the beginning many users just gave their input into web based LLMs, which could then use and learn from their data, creating many problems about secrecy, today LLMs are typically run locally. Practically, companies are running their LLMs either directly on a company run server or they are requesting their service providers to do so, so that no information will get leaked.

What do you need to know about how to use AI

When practically working with AI, there are two distinct cases, either using AI based tools by service providers, which have similar UIs like digital tools before, that need to be understood and mastered by the IP experts, or directly working with a LLM. When directly working with a LLM then the IP expert needs to understand how to prompt with the AI to receive the desired results and how to refine the search results. This seems at first like a complicated task, but when understanding the way of communication with an AI incredible results and improvements can be achieved. Both practical work with LLMs and concrete AI tools will be presented in the workshop by Sebastian Goebel in December 2024.
